RLSS Level 3 National Pool Lifeguarding Qualification (NPLQ)

Note: This course is currently only offered as a Group Booking, although we are hoping to run our own course in Summer 2027

The RLSS UK National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) is the most awarded lifeguard qualification in the UK and Ireland. It is nationally recognised and serves as the essential requirement for anyone looking to work as a professional pool lifeguard.

This comprehensive course provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills needed to supervise a swimming pool environment, prevent accidents, and execute rescues and first aid in emergency situations.

Course Prerequisites

Every candidate must be at least 16 years of age at the time of the final assessment and be able to:

  • Jump/dive into deep water.
  • Swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds.
  • Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back in deep water.
  • Tread water for 30 seconds.
  • Surface dive to the floor of the pool.
  • Climb out unaided without using a ladder or steps.

Assessment & Certification

Assessment for the NPLQ takes place on the final day of the course and is conducted by an independent assessor. It includes:

  1. Theory Assessment: Multiple-choice question papers covering all sections.
  2. Practical Pool Assessment: Demonstrating rescue skills
  3. Practical First Aid & CPR Assessment: Hands-on demonstration of first aid skills and multiple-choice questions
