What is the Emergency Outdoor First Aid qualification? What does an Emergency Outdoor First Aider do?
This course is designed for anyone to become a First Aider working in more remote/wilderness environments. This course offers the basic skills you may come across in the great outdoors, but is designed as an initial treatment unless more qualified help can arrive. The Emergency Outdoor First Aid course is specifically designed for individuals who work or spend time in outdoor environments where medical help is nearby but terrain or weather may complicate a standard rescue.
- Recreational Users: Ideal for hikers, mountain bikers, climbers, and paddlers who want skills beyond a standard office-based course.
- Volunteers & Assistants: Suitable for DofE volunteers, Scout/Guide helpers, and school staff assisting on outdoor trips.
- Low-Risk Professionals: Recommended for those working in “semi-rural” settings like local parks, nature reserves, or outdoor heritage sites.
- Forest School Assistants: Often taken by those supporting a lead instructor (the lead instructor typically requires the full 2-day course).
Important Note on Professional Awards: If you are working toward a professional qualification (e.g., Mountain Leader, British Canoeing Coach, or Forest School Leader), this 1-day course is usually not enough. Most National Governing Bodies (NGBs) legally require the Full 16-hour (2-day) Outdoor First Aid course
Common Roles requiring a EOFA:
🥾 Walking Group Leaders – For those leading low-level coastal or rural walks.
🚵 Mountain Bike Trail Cycle Leaders – For individuals leading groups on managed trail centers.
